End-of-Year Preschool Performance Alternatives
Every year at this time, our music teachers have the same conversation: Why are we asking preschoolers to perform when we know at least one will cry over the experience?
While some children love to be the center of attention and shine in front of a crowd, others are at their best playing in a smaller setting and sharing with families one-on-one. At Kids’ MusicRound, we believe all children can have a positive experience sharing their music learning with their families. Here are a few options to try:
Musical Jamboree!
We like to end the year with a parent-child celebration. We send families an invitation to join us in the evening, and we have a musical party. During class, children suggest their favorite activities, and we incorporate as many as possible.
We add to the fun by substituting balloons or a balloon activity in place of a ball activity. Sometimes, we even wear pajamas. If there are children who love to sing in front of a crowd, we invite them to the front to help lead the activity.
Children thrive with routine, so we use the same lesson plan structure similar to what we follow in class.
Open House
Some schools host an Open House at the end of the year so children can share their classwork with families. This is a great opportunity to throw open the doors to the music room, turn on the children’s favorites from the year, and invite families to sing, dance, and play together as a community.
Display pictures of the children actively engaged in music-making, so parents can see what we’re doing during the day.
Art & Music Night
Partner with the art teacher or classroom teachers to create a special night of the arts. Display the children’s artwork, and share videos of the children actively engaged in music-making during the school day.
Differentiated Performances
If you can’t avoid a performance, consider differentiating. The children who wish to perform can volunteer to stand in front of the group. Those who want to sing from their seats (out loud or in their hearts and minds) can be free to remain in their seats.
